I’d like to agree, but isn’t this exaggerated? Takeoffs and landings would seem to be far more challenging than the level flight that makes up a majority of an eight-hour flight. Surely, with any training at all, less experienced pilots can handle level flight.

The worry here isn't so much about ability but stability. With no one in the cockpit to interfere with some freak it can be hell in a hand basket quick.
