You gave a great explanation which exposes the poor training of the pilot. Their training should have given the ability to control the aircraft in a side wind. It makes me think that the pilot, first officer Kendal Swanson (female) and Captain Jim Hinman were coming down from a mile high experience while on auto pilot.
