You didn’t pet it and try to calm it down? Lol, j/k. Rule,of thumb, IF a wild animal like a raccoon which is pred9minantly a night critter, is seen during the day- espedislly near a populated area, efen if it isnt acting weird, assume it is rabid and steer well clear of it and contact authorities like you did. If it is acting weird, all the more reason to get out of the area quickly- rabies compels some animals to bite at anything and everything. Raccoons are very bitey animals anyways, but with rabies, they are berserkers on peyote

Forgot to add, skunks are big carriers of rabies too, and are predominantly night critters, so be wary of any seen in daylight- just assume that they have rabies. Don’t take a chance.
