From his autobiography he was raised without brothers or sisters or neighbors. He found his imagination. He would work out in his mind how something might react with another thing, and observe the results. So his thoughts were never bound by the perception of what is; he was always thinking 'what could be'? ... whether 'in the box' or 'out of the box'.
