At least six people are believed to be dead and another nine injured — six critically — after a tourist submarine sank off of Egypt’s Red Sea coast Thursday.
Twenty-nine of the roughly 40 passengers onboard were rescued, with those injured taken to local hospitals according to the BBC.
The submarine, “The Sinbad,” foundered close to the harbor in the city of Hurghada, a popular tourist destination on the Red Sea known for its beaches.
The vessel can descend 82 feet deep in the sea and offers stunning views of the coral reefs and marine life, according to the website for Sinbad Submarines.
The sub has been in operation for several years, with the company boasting itself for owning two of just “14 recreational submarines” in the world.

Usaid funding cuts, time to investigate 😎
Well. “SIND” is the Arabic word for Submarine. That should have been a clue.
Only kidding-it isn’t really, but...truth in advertising.
Sigh. I have to keep in mind this was a real tragedy and people did die. Sometimes it is easy to go off on a tangent on the Internet and forget that.
I wonder how many of the crew got out before the passengers?
Crew? They had a crew?
I’ve been on that one as well, back in 2008. It was a company called Atlantis submarines, or something like that. They took you by boat out to Buck Island, and then transferred to the submarine there. Most of the tour was around 30 or 40 feet of depth as you said, but then they went over an underwater cliff and down to about 100 feet for part of it. It was amazing, and the company seemed well-run.
The most surprising thing was how quickly most colors fade away as you descend. Even at very shallow depths, red light gets filtered out and everything takes on a muted look. It was disappointing to imagine seeing beautiful colorful coral formations only for everything to appear in shades of gray and blue.
And I agree with whoever said that they would avoid a submarine ride run by Egyptians. I generally try to avoid anything potentially life-threatening run by third-worlders.
The Daily Mail said it ran into a reef..
Yep, no dolphins no go.
Subs require more engineering to survive their environment that an orbital space craft. Space craft are hard to get into space, easy to exist there. A space craft can still get the energy it needs from it’s outside environment.
Subs are easy to sink and hard to keep successfully submerged safely. Subs must contain all the energy required within it’s internal environment.
You described it exactly as I had remembered it. I remember going to another island. Thanks for the name. And they towed the sub over from another island where it was charged overnight, as I remember it. Thanks.
Thanks. I did not read the article. Shame on me….
This article is in error. The Submarine is Supposed to Sink, near as I can figure.
It did fail to surface - that’s the problem, near as I can figure.
I took the overnight train from Cairo to Luxor. It was comfortable, clean, and well maintained. The staff and security were excellent.
Porter: “Madam, your children have ordered beer and said to charge it to your bill?”
Me: “No, fruit juice, water, or soda pop. Absolutely no beer (they were 8, 9, and 11).”
We were on that sub about that time too. I couldn’t wait until it surfaced. Will never do that again.
Reminds me of an important analysis of Arab shortcomings.

Some of the reasons bear directly on the issue of maintenance know-how.
LOL, that’s funny right there!
I’ve been to the Red Sea many times. It is obvious that the Egyptian side don’t have the skills or the regulations to maintain their equipment. Literally tape and glue. Does anyone remember the hot air balloon with the gas leak that caught fire and killed everyone on board? It’s a beautiful place just stay away from things that require regular maintenance. Heck I once had a taxi driver who needed gas and he was chain smoking cigarettes the whole time at the pump.
