Years ago I had a friend who was dying from AIDS. We went to see him in the VA hospital, but got there almost immediately after he died. He was gay, and unrepentant.
The expression on his dead face was one of unspeakable horror. He saw where he was going upon his death.
Alternative explanation—the life review.
The way it works is that you get to experience your entire life—by feeling the emotions of everyone you knew.
If you have been a (mostly) bad person that has to be brutal.

Back in the mid 90s my wife and I attended a church in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I became friends with some EMTs/Paramedics who also attended. They told me some stories about people in the ambulance who were absolutely terrified as they were dying. I’ll never forget one story about a man who died with a look of sheer terror on his face and in his eyes. Very unsettling, to say the least. It’s so strange how people will deny, deny, deny Jesus until it’s too late.
