There is an inescapable problem with the materialist explanation of NDEs as the "the brain’s mechanism to help protect the dying person from the pain and fear of dying." Why would evolution develop such a mechanism?
It could have evolved to protect the person having an NDE rather than having the DE.

Agreed- the kind goes into an altered state- perhaps one that “relaxes from the trauma” it is experiencing, and therefore better able to withstand the trauma for longer. That is a possibility
