I remember that back in the 1960’s, ornithologists used to spray paint seagulls in order to track them. Currently, they use radio trackers, which have less effect on the birds.

They did polar bears that way also. I remember a program about the polar bears raiding a town to eat trash and some of the bears has numbers spray painted on them.
