You can use Layer 2 protocols to do small transactions like retail in a timely fashion.

With up to 40 percent swings in “ value”, I disagree. The primary qualification for “ money” is to be stable, not a roller coaster. Carry on.

Around 1700, the gold standard replaced paper money as the world's base currency because paper money became too easy to produce with the printing press.
Since human nature doesn't change, expect some crypto currency to eventually replace the US dollar and today's fiat currencies.
For example, a few weeks ago, DOGE discovered that 14 departments in the executive branch were producing unauthorized money out of thin air. Magic monetary production can't happen with Bitcoin or any other peer-to-peer network architecture.
