"Volare" (Italian for 'To fly'), is a song originally recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno in 1958. In 1960, the song was recorded by Italian-American singer Bobby Rydell, reaching number four on the Hot 100 during the summer of 1960.

the singing nun and her “Dominique”

I find it astounding that a French-language ballad about Domingo de Guzman, a thirteenth-century Spanish crusader evangelist and diplomat made it to #1 and sat there for a month just weeks before Beatlemania swept the nation.

Very true!

Our family anthem is “That’s Amore”, Dean Martin version. A stereotype song that probably would not be made today. Those seemed to be a thing in the 50’s.

Americans have always shown a certain fondness for foreign songs which they can’t understand but have good melodies and good orchestration.

This catchy tune is in the Sicilian dialect of Italian, but the words are easy to figure out even if you don't know the language, and it was a big hit.
