Agree 100%. One of the worst things we ever did was to overthrow the Hawaiian Monarchy. It should at least be a Commonwealth, like Puerto Rico, if not Independent.

After seeing how badly the Japanese treated the Polynesians in the islands they overran, the Hawaiians wanted closer ties to the U.S. The terms of the referendum were that it would take a 90% plurality and statehood was irrevocable without the consent of the U.S. Government, meaning the Congress.

Restoring the monarchy would be the siren call all the leftists and native Hawaiians could get behind. Elected democrats(+unelected) would have a cow fighting it on 2 fronts. A 99 year ‘lease’ where all buildings would be turned over as the home owning haloes pass on would be justice. The Lahaina fires could be used for a George Floyd response with no need for violence.
