Lawrence O’Donnell & Rosie O’Donnell. What is going on with people with that last name?
There is another aspect among Irish Catholics that does not affect Catholics of Italian, German, or Slavic descent. Remember that both Rosie and Lawrence O'Donnell are both entirely of Irish ancestry, with Rosie's father actually born in Ireland. The history of 700 years of British rule, compounded with over 200 years of brutal suppression of Catholicism, the majority religion of Ireland, and the reduction of the Irish Catholics to effective serfdom to English landlords, gave the Irish who came to America with a resentment of Anglo-Saxons and Protestants similar to what blacks have against whites due to three centuries of slavery and segregation. Catholic immigrants from the other parts of Europe may have had grudges against Northern Italians, Lutherans, Russians, Austrians, etc., but they were pretty well left at the docks at Hamburg, Naples, etc. Not so the Irish. The Irish in America accomplished much, including dominating the Catholic Church and the Democratic Party in the Northeast by the end of the 19th Century. However, the resentment against past abuses led many Irish American Catholics to be more sympathetic to liberal causes than their co-religionists.
All right, you may say, but what about non-Irish Catholic liberals like Dr. Fauci or Tim Walz? Both men renounced their Catholic upbringing, the former to agnosticism, the latter to liberal Lutheranism. Otherwise, the defection to the Left on the part of both Catholics and others from more traditional backgrounds is due to the pervasive effect of cultural Marxism in the educational system.
Possibly 8th cousins.
Doing genealogy, going up the trees and down the trees, I found while 1st cousins often have little in common, 8th cousins are often very alike in looks, political views, interests, etc.
