The documents are printed copies of files. IF the files are not destroyed burning the paper is useless. Also, there will be a ledger with the document name, type, assigned number and brief contents. It will say who has copies. The destruction of the copies must be witnessed, and they need to be struck from the register. Failure to follow procedures can result in prison sentences. Anyone doing this is an absolute idiot. Everyone who destroys a document had damned well better get a document receipt stating it was turned in and destroyed. Because the penalties were so severe, I kept my receipts for fifteen years.
