Soaking of (American) dairy farmers, in a post earlier today, days was shown that Canada imports a tariff on us at almost 300% for milk and cheese. WTF anyhow? Can’t our farmers provide what we need? Wasn’t there a time not long ago when our milk was being disposed of?
I can see how you’ve developed a food aversion to it. I’m not lactose intolerant myself but was always able to drink it even though I was told all my life I was allergic to it.
I could see how that lactose intolerance with those digestive issues (I know what they are) could cause you to not grow well, and give you a miserable childhood. I’m really sorry to hear that and really glad you’re doing better now.
I’m dealing with similar issues now with everything except oatmeal. I have bad food intolerances that have gotten progressively worse over many years, and know it’s awful when your digestive tract decides it doesn’t like something and tries to get rid of it for you.
Lab grown chicken uses tumors to make the meat fast.
I would guess that they are using breast tumors to make milk.

You don’t have to use immortal cell lines to do targeted aka precision fermentation. A number of Israeli companies specifically don’t use immortal cell lines they use regular cells harvested via biopsy means. The Israelis are the world leaders in precision fermentation. You take the cells out ,grab the DNA you need for whatever protein ,lipid or triglyceride you want to make and put that into a ecoli or yeast cell which then is happy to churn out what you asked it too.
This company took a single egg and plans to grow steaks with it ,none of them using immortal cell lines. Egg cells are programmable inot anything the cow makes as the universal starter cells.

I think people miss the larger point. Humans need to get off this rock. We are never taking cows or any other livestock to space the mass balance will not allow for it let alone the space, and feed requirements. All this lab grown, cultured food is SPACE FOOD that is what humans are taking to Mars and elsewhere. It’s when not if anymore. Boomers may not life long enough to see humans not only on Mars but living in it, but genZ certainly will see it. Gen Alpha probably will have some of its members born on Mars thanks to Elon and his BFR errr starship I still wanted him to call it the Big F.... Rocket.
Humans also use nearly 70% of the arable land to grow feed for livestock and yet 4 billion humans have chronic protein defficiency. There is not enough land nor feed to have 8 billion let alone ten billion eating like Americans or even Europeans.
When these lab products come down in prices to be cheaper than traditional protein sources people will make the switch for purely economical reasons or don’t and just pay the higher price for the competing product.
They are right in that even with the energy needed to make the steel tanks the yields are so high and the lifespan of the tanks so long that yeah it’s 90% less energy than growing feed , harvesting feed, transporting feed, the cow takes 10 lbs of feed to make one lb of live weight not meat weight that is only 40% or so of the on the hoof weight of a steer. Most is bone,fat,hide,and guts.
Then remember that plants only turn less than 1% of solar energy into total plant mass which includes the roots,stalks,and leaves. So a fraction of a fraction of 1% actually makes it into the corn kernels that you are feeding those cows with. But but grassfed cows, no most American cattle are corn fed in feedlot operations. That is what allows American beef to be cheap, if we mandated only grass feed cattle we would have prices like the EU or Argentina.
Now compare that to precision fermentation processes that can use a chemical substrate for its energy source, say acetic acid ,formic acid,glucose,or sucrose the list is long. Every one of those substrates can be made at high Faraday efficiency from CO2 gas,water and electrons. For acetic acid and formic 90% plus are the norm now.that means 90% of your electrical power ends up in the desired product. This means you can turn solar photons into electrons via solar panels at 25-40% efficiency then take those electrons and turn them into microbe food at 90% plus. That is a factor of 20 to 40 more per square meter of sunlit ground vs plants. Humans have not just exceeded nature we took a order of magnitude jump past anything nature could ever do.
You don’t even need solar panels just use nukes one 1000 megawatt sized reactor could produce enough synthetic growth substrate or go directly to electrofood to feed a city sized population all the protein,lipids,starches they need. Scientists have already taught microbes to eat electrons , CO2 and water and make complete proteins, any number of lipids,and triglycerides, starches and glucose or sucrose. Glucose fuels every cell in our bodies and every other mammal too it is the universal sugar fuel every cell uses.
Lab food is not coming it’s here and not going away especially as our human population grows and resources get depleted.
