Ever wonder what it’s like to make six figures for doing absolutely nothing? Meet Ed McAn—a government worker who collected a taxpayer-funded paycheck while writing books. And guess what? He’s not alone.

It’s interesting. It’s not like he didn’t work. Until Clinton was in office and they gave him no work to do but kept him on not needing to work.

There was obviously a grift going on where they needed employees on the books. He probably had nothing to do with it.

I remember, they had a case of somebody holding 2 full time jobs. Checked in, then they could never found him, but eventually, he checked out.
It turned out, he hold a second full time job in between!

Who would be stupid enough to talk about it on camera?

A smart person would not talk about it at all.

But there are a lot of people that can’t help themselves, they have to brag.

And if the have the chance to brag to the world on TV, they can’t help themselves.

It’s been going on for decades in the cities, states and federal governments. I know a gal who got a masters in public administration and accounting from a top school. Right out of college she landed a plum job in a very large state. She and 5 others. But they had no work to do. After months the crew of newbies went to the boss and asked plainly “why did you hire us if there is no work to do?” The boss said “we had room in the budget and if we didn’t spend it, they would cut our budget, but since we hired you now we can show that we need even more money”.

This is our government. No incentive to be efficient at all. Just take money and ask for more.

She eventually left that job and ended up being quite a muckity muck in another state. I could see why it’s disheartening to get a great job but have nothing to do - waste of money, talent, and ultimately no experience so I’m glad she left and got a real job. Still in government but actual work, reports to submit, testimony to give etc.

Yes. They hire people to max out their budgets so they can justify a request for more money.

That’s how Kamala Harris got started. She had very highly paid do-nothing jobs. Of course, she used her “skills” with Willie to land those plum assignments.

California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (1994) was a part-time position that paid $97,088 per year ($208k in 2025 dollars). She was in the role 6 months. Then Brown appointed Harris to the California Medical Assistance Commission (1994–1998) which paid $70,000 per year (about $135k in 2025 dollars). It required meeting twice a month.

Department heads want to have as many people under them as they can. Whether they are needed, is a secondary matter.

I bet he did it to try to sell some more of the two books he wrote on the government's dime. He also said he had some sci-fi short stories published. The covers of the books and titles of his stories were briefly shown. I bet he said he'd do the interview, IF they showed them.

These people were paid simply for existing, and all on our tax dollars. Disgusting and disgraceful!

I graduated in ‘77. My father worked for the Corps of Engineers. It used to be a great job building and fixing things. Then along came Carter and environmentalism. My classmates that went to work there before me, I stayed and got a Masters, were doing absolutely nothing.

I went to work for Exxon. Never a dull moment. You could do as much as you could stand and be about as big as you would work for and wanted.

Yeah, that’s true but a little different. That’s government creating commissions and boards and blue ribbon committees that have a big salary but don’t really do much. They are created as perks, giveaways, graft, payback to allies and supporters etc. Plenty of that crap too. Unnecessary posts that could be handled by courts or internal agency but spun out to create appointments.

It’s like the mafia “Paulie gets 2 no show jobs and 3 no work jobs”.

Thanks for putting the true story to my background info. That is important detail you fleshed out.

Yes, it’s the ultimate in patronage where you don’t just put your pals into jobs, you CREATE high-paying NO-SHOW “jobs” just for your buddies. I’m sure Kammie found appropriate ways to thank her benefactor.

Credit to the MSM for covering it in 2003. An “influencer” finds the footage and adds stupid cartoon characters. Ok, so what is being done about it?

Here’s another video about how things work in D.C. Very informative about how you are “looked down upon” for being productive as a govt worker. It’s a Peter Santello video for those who are familiar with him. I saw it months ago.
