If he had punched him out instead, he would have only gotten a 2 minute penalty.

Fighting (when both players are willing and engaged) is a 5 min penalty. Fighting an unwilling adversary is a 10 minute misconduct or a match penalty (whole game) with a review from the league. If a 5 min or match penalty is assessed in the last minutes of the game, the coach is fined. That's career limiting at the AHL level.
