Refused to wear a mask. Wore a shemagh anywhere they were “mandatory” (mom was going through chemo during COVID). I got kicked out of a handful of places for “not wear a mask,” despite clearly having my face covered. It was about obedience, not practical risk mitigation.

Spot on. Same experience, although there were times where it got real dicey for me.
This in AZ, so I started carrying "OWB" (AZ is a constitutional carry state).
My troubling encounters went away. It got much better. I still won't ever forget though.
