It’s always a shock when the hobby loses one of its founding fathers. You know it’s coming, but not today, right? Some of heroes fade away with little fanfare, but not Gene Winfield, who passed on the morning of March 4, 2025, just a few months before what would have been his 98th birthday. Gene could never be described as a recluse; he was out and about and doing stuff until the very end. I had just chatted with him and 103-year-old Ed Iskenderian at the Grand National Roadster Show. Gene looked a little frail, but he and Isky connected like two live wires bringing light to a party as they regaled each other with stories and inspired everybody within earshot. Gene may have faded from our lives, and his passing leaves a big hole in the custom car world, but his legacy lives on in an amazing body of work.

Saw Gene on an episode of Bitchin Rides. He appeared to be a wealth of information and happy to pass it on to a new generation.
