Two-bit hustler Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) longs for “a life of ease and plenty.” Trailed by an inglorious history of go-nowhere schemes, he tries to hatch a lucrative plan with a famous wrestler. But there is no easy money in this underworld of shifting alliances, bottomless graft, and pummeled flesh—and Fabian soon learns the horrible price of his ambition. Luminously shot in the streets of London while Hollywood blacklisters back home were closing in on director Jules Dassin, Night and the City, also starring Gene Tierney, is film noir of the first order, and one of Dassin’s crowning achievements. The very tough and prolonged fight scene is between Stanislaus Zbyszko, a celebrated professional wrestler in real life, and Mike Mazurki, who before becoming an actor was himself a professional wrestler.

Gene Tierney was one of the most beautiful girls of the silver screen. Really nice lady later in life, I wrote her a few times for autographs.

She also played one of the most chilling roles in all of Film Noir as Ellen in "Leave
Her to Heaven". Once you see the rowboat scene, you can never "unremember" it.

I will have to see that some time. She was great in "Laura", though her part was as demanding in that movie.

I hated her in that role. She was so evil and not like her usual roles. And yes, the rowboat scene was terrible.

Yes, she was a very easy autograph to get. I would send a couple of 8x10 photos and an self addressed envelope to return them.

I would write a nice note and they came back usually in 2-3 weeks. The was in the late 80’s.

She was evil in Leave Her To Heaven. I really hated her in the movie, but her acting was excellent.

Laura, of course was a classic. I think I fell in love with her too the first time I watched it. I went out and bought her autograph. Later I found out she was still alive (late 80’s) and I was able to write her and get more autographs.

I saw that in a theater several years ago. Great noir film. Interestingly, although it takes place in London, the actors, who are American, speak in American accents.
