I remember reading of riots in the 1840s when Whites in power suggested freed blacks move to Africa. They blacks said they had NOTHING IN COMMON with Africa and refused, rioting against the idea.
Now the idea is come full circle again this time from the Black Community.

During the Civil War Lincoln tried colonizing black Americans in Haiti. It was a disaster--I think about half of the colonists died before the project was abandoned.

I've read of at least one case of a slave, before the Civil War, being offered his freedom if he would then move to Liberia--he turned down the offer.
