I served in the military. I never recanted my Oath. On the other hand, I think the "Pledge of Allegiance" is just lame. Consider the following:

A real Oath needs to be said just once
Allegiance to a piece of cloth is foolish
Daily repetition is propagandizing
It is possible to revere the Nation and not believe in God

Allegiance to a piece of cloth is foolish

" ... and to the Republic for which it stands ... "

It is possible to revere the Nation and not believe in God

And that has gotten us to where we are today: A godless, splintered "nation".
