The word does seem to derive from the French: cabale which meant 'intrigue'. Etymology connects the word with Hebrew QBLH - but the Hebrew (Kabbalah) means 'to receive'.
It is misleading to identify Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical rabbinical works on Scripture as secret or intrigue; they tended to be a separate group because of their attempt to discern 'the deeper' understanding of the ancient Scriptural texts - but they published their results openly. The Jewish Encyclopedia equates QBLH with the Talmud, that dealing with the interpretation of Biblical laws and traditions, QBLH dealing with the interpretation of deeper, hidden spiritual meaning. The French term came to be associated with secret groups seeking to influence - overthrow - a government.
The Jewish approach to QBLH has spawned Christian Kabbalists - of which I am one - who would likely also be termed 'mystics'. I have web posted some abbreviated personal interpretations myself, especially my page concerning Biblical use of numbers. 🙂
Judaism has been influenced by the Neo-Canaanites for a very long time.
All these are neo-Canaanite stuff if you ask a person in Judaism they really don't understand how they're related to Judaism. They just are.
Talmud, Star of David, Tefillin and many other things.
Tefillin or black cubes with a tether line. They will claim "reminder of God's intervention at the time of the Exodus from Egypt" (If you need a container on your head it would fit the head. A little box doesn't fit the head. makes no freaking sense.)
In neo-Canaanite belief they had two black cubes that served as the portals (Saturn and a another portal on earth) tied together(action) where the god could travel to earth become the personification of the star(god.) Which is why their tripartite god is one god. Catholics have also been influenced they use a doorway or archway from the same reference to the portal on earth.
That is my point the Neo-Canaanites are still with us. Their primary god we call Hecate (mystic.) Her primary ability is to "manipulate reality." She looks like Columbia (personification)
