President Trump is planning to sign an executive order that would for the first time make English the official language of the U.S., according to White House officials.

The judge better not issue their opinion in English.
Lol.
Bilingual documents need to go too. If you can’t speak it or read it, thats on you, especially if you have been here a long time.
It’s about time. I’m tired of hearing crap on the phone that makes it sound as though Espanol is America’s primary language. It’s not.
Why not Swedish?
Basically symbolic, but it sends the right message.
Will only last until a democrat is elected unless congress stops being stupid and makes this and other Trump EO’s a law.
It’s about time! Thank you President Trump. I agree that Congress should make it law, to the extent possible given the 9th and 10th Amendments.
Voting forms should all be in English...For Federal elections at least.
I was gonna say...
> School children should have a basic proficiency in speaking English before starting school. <
Yep. A friend of mine taught math at a Virginia middle school. He was fired at the end of his first year there. The conversation went something like this:
Principal: We are not renewing your contract. Your class’s test scores are too low.
My friend: But less than half of my students spoke English! It was a real challenge to teach them anything.
Principal: I know it’s not your fault. But you don’t have tenure yet, and I’ve got to fire somebody.
My friend was so disgusted by this that he left teaching altogether.
My daughter is a teacher and has children that don’t know how to request permission to go to the bathroom. In classroom kindergarten bathrooms are ok but by 1st grade students should all speak English
I think they even teach in Spanish in California.
Bingo.
BTTT
Although Spanish is the dominant language in Puerto Rico, more than 50% of the residents can (at least on a basic level) speak, read, and understand English.
They can adapt.
This needs more than an executive order. What can be done by executive order can be undone by executive order.

I’m a retired public school teacher. Four times a year I get a newsletter discussing our pension system. One section of it is in Chinese!
How the hell can someone teach in the United States for 30 years, and still need to have things explained to him in Chinese?
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by this. It’s been my experience that most public school administrators are either woke or stupid (sometimes it’s both).
All Air Traffic Control instructions worldwide are in English.
It will be an even bigger problem in the upcoming state of Quebec.🙄
The actual text will matter, as will whatever Congress does or doesn't do to follow up on it.
It could result in an immediate expense reduction, and forestall any schemes to burden the private sector with mandatory polylingual pubs.
I'm going to guess that translation won't be prohibited, so locales can revert to their former discretionary approach for regional needs.
In any case auto-translation apps are now pretty common; no need to wait for the Babelfish.🐟
