‘ Trump supporters hear Trump seriously. Trump haters hear him literally.’

I have no idea why this is considered a legitimate response.

If we can’t take the president’s word literally, or one must attempt to decipher what they say, we’re screwed.

As Reagan once said, "For our friends in the press who place a high premium on accuracy, let me say, I did not actually hear George Washington say that". LOL

Like Trump, the Reagan haters didn't take Reagan seriously but took Reagan literally trying to nit-pick about some micro detail he didn't get correct while communicating a larger idea that was right.

I think of his words like those of the Oracle at Delphi. The wise ancients took the words seriously and considered their meaning, while the foolish ones took them literally based on their first impression, and that lead to their downfall.
