A hiker is missing after jumping into the ocean at Wilder Ranch State Park on Tuesday morning, leading to a search and recovery mission.

"We got a call of an individual that jumped from the cliff into the water. Approximately 75 foot drop into the water," said Eric Bither, CAL FIRE battalion chief.

The hiker, who ventured away from his group, jumped into the water near Wilder Beach.

Witnesses reported he was close to getting out.

"He was witnessed trying to climb the rocks and get out and, probably at that point, swell came in, which was very high today. And he was noticed face down," Bither added.

An all-out search from the air and sea was activated, involving units from Cal Fire, Santa Cruz Fire, State Parks, Coast Guard, and the sheriff's office.

Jet skis were deployed, but rough water hindered the search effort.

Recommended Hawaii man freed after 30 years in prison "We did have some high surf warnings and especially in this area with those large breaking waves and sneaker waves in that high surf that can really play against us in something like this," said Ashley Keehn, a spokesperson with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

After roughly 90 minutes of searching, the 31-year-old man from Santa Cruz was declared a missing person, and the mission turned into a search and recovery.

"It's absolutely tragic for everyone involved, for this man's family, for the people that he was with, for other witnesses and for our law enforcement and first responders that are trying to bring him back safely. It's really just a tragedy all around," Keehn said.

The sheriff's office is withholding the missing man's identity pending relatives' notification.

The search for him may resume tomorrow morning.

Search and recovery mission underway for missing hiker at Wilder Ranch State Park

I don't remember many places you could jump right into the ocean there.

As you know, lots of high cliffs there. I’ve hiked down into many of the coves at Wilder. I used to take my kids biking there along the gorgeous coast when they were little in the 90s.

Weird story, though. Sounds like either drugs or suicide. If suicide, he must have changed his mind after he went “splat.”

He “ventured away from his group.” If suicide, you’d think he would be there alone, not with a group...unless it was a local chapter meeting of the “Voluntary Human Extinction Movement.”

Yes, there are a lot of high cliffs, but it seems to me, most are not a straight shot to the ocean, there is sand or rocks below. I know of one possible spot, but it’s definitely not 75 feet. Like I said, it might take some effort to land in the ocean.

They say the people who survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge say they changed their mind after they jumped.

It doesn't seem like a good spot for suicide.

“they say they changed their mind after they jumped.”

Those would be the longest 4 seconds of your life.

I’ve been here my entire life (born in the Branciforte Plaza when it was a hospital) and don’t know if I’ve ever been to Wilder Ranch. Maybe. In the 70’s we went cave spelunking near UCSC. I hear Wilder Ranch is a great place to run, walk or ride a bike, so I’ll have to make it out there before I leave California.
