The Brutalist was suggested to me, and when I discovered it was about an architect I added that fact to the title and wondered if this was a the guy who started the horrible turn-away from beautiful architecture, which intrigued me, but then I learned it was 3 1/2 hours long. The only long movies I've ever watched were Fiddler on the Roof and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Then I learned it was about a guy who escaped the Holocaust, and it was a definite "no".

I have the greatest empathy for those poor souls who were persecuted by the Germans, but I do not wish to watch depressing movies. No movies about sick or dead/dying children, or divorce, or WWII prisoner movies of any kind, Bridge on the River Kwai excepted.

Ironically as long as “Brutalist” was — the editing chops were good and the pacing made it feel quick. There’s also an intermission in between! At least in theaters.

It wasn’t depressing, it was very “nothing” that’s why I didn’t like it. The story gave no reason for emotional investment in anyone or anything — and while I’m not puritanical when it comes to film content, the explicit scenes were unnecessary.

Re: Anora, I haven’t seen it. But I am around a lot of industry folk here in L.A. and it’s kind of disappointing to be this removed from the Oscars this Sunday! I grew up enjoying them. :)
