My mom and dad sailed on it in late 1952 after they got married. I have an original SS United States post card they sent to my grandparents.

it heads towards its underwater grave off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

A long trip through the Gulf of America.

It is good to see that it will be used as an artificial reef for divers. I would not have minded seeing it turned into a museum/restaurant/hotel like what was done with the Queen Mary in Long Beach (went there last year and enjoyed doing so).

I’ve driven by this ship a number of times.

Always makes me think of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.”

A relic from a disappeared era

She’s headed to my area. I hope her scuttling will be respectful.

Too much time has passed for the SS United States to be converted. It is now over seventy years old! The useful life of an ocean going ship is 20-30 years.

I worked with a radio officer who was part of a group that wanted to keep the United States running as a cruise ship and selling the cabins as condos. This was in the early 1980’s. The project never got off the ground.

My family took the SS United States from NYC to Bremerhaven Germany when my dad was transferred from Ft Ord California to Landstuhl Germany in 1964. Fun times.

No complaining from the Enviro-Weenies about sinking a ship to the bottom of their beloved ocean? You’d think they’d be screaming and hanging from the chandeliers over this.

It’s a great fundraising/grifting opportunity! ;)

I guess in some instances it helps the "environment" by allowing organisms to grow on it creating a reef like structure.

What would her value be had she been built pre-atomic era?

the queen mary aggregate experience probably will scare anyone from trying to convert an old commercial liner on this scale for a long, long time.

Unlike buildings, liners aren’t made to last. Trying to convert one to provide an economic function can only work if there is unlimited money to run losses.

Military ships provide a counter-point. The largest I know of is the texas, launched over a century ago - but look into the cost and financing of the drydocking the last year or so.

With all of the trillions of dollars wasted by the federal government on all kinds of garbage, it’s a sin that this engineering marvel won’t be saved for posterity.

Interesting. According to this video she will be towed to Norfolk, VA (where she used to be mothballed) before continuing on to the gulf coast.

Besides the live cam, there’s a < 3 min video on the news link that shows her arrival into Philly 30 years ago. In it is a short clip of her clearing a bridge — by a couple of inches, looks like.
