Pennsylvania Rep. Rob Bresnahan is the latest swing-district Republican to issue a warning over deep spending cuts GOP leaders are targeting for key safety net programs in a bill to enact President Donald Trump's massive domestic agenda.
“I ran for Congress under a promise of always doing what is best for the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Bresnahan in a statement Friday. “If a bill is put in front of me that guts the benefits my neighbors rely on, I will not vote for it. Pennsylvania’s Eighth District chose me to advocate for them in Congress. These benefits are promises that were made to the people of NEPA and where I come from, people keep their word.”

Only about 80% of the Social Security I might get would be earned.
Table 1. Social Security Benefit Formula for Workers Who Attain Age 62, Become Disabled, or Die in 2024
Factor Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME)
90% of the first $1,174 of AIME, plus
32% of AIME over $1,174 and through $7,078, plus
15% of AIME over $7,078
The first ~$12,000 of averaged FICA income is given an almost three-fold (90/32) advantage. It’s a sort of welfare benefit for people that have not earned a lot over their lifetime.
The public employees that typically make far more than $12,000/year just got thrown most of that welfare benefit too.

DROP THE CELL PHONES/THE PAY TV/THE ENTERTAINMENT—& STOP HAVING KIDS YOU CANNOT SUPPORT WITHOUT SUPPORT FROM OTHERS.
The $2T proposed spending cuts are over 10 years. Reporters are either told to not report that or they choose not to.
And that 10 yrs is not divided equally. It’s not $200B/yr. It’s back loaded so that it never happens.
And btw, the priority of the budget talks are making permanent the Trump 2017 tax cuts. Tax cuts, not a new VAT imposition.
The concept is, of course, a consumption tax, levied evenly on all levels of income — including those paying with SNAP or welfare.
That can just be put to bed. It is no more likely to happen than the real solution — execution of huge portions of the populace and confiscating their estate assets to pay down the debt.
That’s been true since the first person tried to cut a program.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Seriously. Not every government program is bad. There are severely disabled adults and children that rely on these programs. I’m not saying that they cannot segue to something else. But I would make sure the something else is there before taking these things away. People are very scared. Maybe you don’t agree with the program, but why do you want to torture people. It’s not their fault. I hope his cuts are surgical and not an atom bomb. Let the State’s know first. I am an Arizona State Senator. I do not know how we are going to do our budget not knowing what is going to be taken away. AGAIN. I am not saying the cuts aren’t needed. I am as elated as everyone else, however, I just hope it is done in a way with the least amount of damage. I do not know if you guys understand how many people are on Medicaid, in our State, AHCCCS. Under a Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, they expanded Medicaid when Obamacare hit. It is very complicated and we need to unwind it carefully. Seriously folks. This will come back to haunt Republicans if we do not do it correctly. Apparently our Democrat Governor is going to do a zoom meeting on Tuesday to disclose what will be cut. I will report back to you what it all looks like in real time.
Every program can be reinstated if necessary.
No need to panic.
“If a bill is put in front of me that guts the benefits my neighbors rely on, I will not vote for it. Pennsylvania’s Eighth District chose me to advocate for them in Congress.”
They voted for you to grab other Americans’ tax money for benefits they rely on? They need to talk to their State pols and let them figure it out.
They’re not cutting Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security; only for illegals. That’s at least an 80/20 in PA.
England had a long history of welfare.
“Parliament intervened with the Statute of Cambridge 1388 that penalized unauthorized departures, legitimized begging and required parishes to support their own poor. The “Old Poor Law” of 1601 created a more coherent system, requiring each parish to be responsible for its own poor, funded by collecting rates from property owners. It distinguished the deserving and undeserving poor. The Act of Settlement 1662 restricted poor relief to long-term residents or those born in a parish. In the 18th century, some parishes formed unions to build workhouses for the poor who were able to work.”

Yep. Nothing new at all.
Trunp has made a point in saying that any american citizen receiving assistance will not lose their benefits.
Don’t believe the misinformation campaign. They are just trying to scare people like they did before the election.
“I ran for Congress under a promise of always doing what is best for the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania,”
But when you swore in it was to uphold and defend the Constitution wasnt’ it?
“Every program can be reinstated if necessary.”
You politically don’t want to cause people unneeded worry or grief.
Things have to be gradually and carefully set right.
I wouldn’t mind them changing the rules for those next in line. And make them super strict. Bed ridden for any benefits at all. But grandfather those getting now. Otherwise 2026 will be a bloodbath. Yes millions of MEGA get SSDI and food stamps among other stuff.
As long as it’s true, I don’t mind him getting blamed. It’s when they lie and distort the situation like the January inflation number and the airplane crash. Neither were his fault.
That would be nice—and hopefully it is done.
But—the notion that you are going to cut a trillion dollars and not accidentally hit some “bone” is a standard of perfection that cannot be met in the real world.
It is like telling troops on the battlefield not to kill any civilians while the other side gets to kill anyone they want.
It is the difference between Vietnam and World War II.
You win—then you mitigate the inevitable problems as best you can—and yes sometimes you can not mitigate every one of them.
Good lord. He was just elected in his first election in a blue area.
Wacky Alabama senator cried over her state losing money. She was cool until it affected her state then she got mad. lol.
Putting his state perks before the good of the country is anti-MAGA.
