Her younger sister took a DNA test in an effort to prove her ancestry claims were true (because she should be of indigenous descent as well), and oops, it came back negative. It also came back as a close familial match to Buffy's son, which in turn verifies the relationships involved.

Buffy Sainte-Marie refuses to be directly tested for very obvious reasons, but it doesn't really matter- her ancestry has been determined already (other relatives, birth certificate, etc). She's a pretendian.

In late November 2023, Sainte-Marie deleted all claims of being Cree and born on Piapot First Nation in Saskatchewan from her official website.

Ira Lavalee, the acting chief of the Piapot First Nation, said that Sainte-Marie should take a DNA test to clear up the confusion: “That’s something that anyone in my community can do and would not have fear of doing because we know who we are and what we are, and it’s easily provable through a DNA test. If Buffy did that, that’s one thing that could clear all this up.”
