Today, Senator Rick Scott introduced the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act, to officially “lock the clock” and end the twice-yearly time change and make Daylight Saving Time the national year-round standard.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year – it’s an unnecessary, decades-old practice that’s more of an annoyance to families than benefit to them.

I’ve thought Newfoundland should be on the hour:
52.5 - 67.5: Atlantic
67.5 - 82.5: Eastern
82.5 - 97.5: Central
97.5 - 112.5: Mountain
112.5 - 127.5: Pacific

The Michigan mitten and Tennessee would shift to Central time...

“Or how about just go with sun time. Has worked for thousands of years”

Two hundred years ago the clock, train, and electric light reshaped society during the Industrial Revolution by separating time from the sun’s cycle.

Clocks replaced solar time with synchronized time, enabling factory work to follow strict schedules rather than daylight. Trains were a catalyst for synchronized time because they required standardized timetables, reinforcing the need for uniform timekeeping. This precision allowed for the specialization of labor, where workers performed highly specific tasks in a coordinated system, maximizing efficiency.

Today, computers manage time, but humans still rely on clocks to stay grounded in a structured world.

It is always “for the children”. Just start school an hour later.

When I was a kid school started at 9:00 Am, lunch 12 to 1 and class til 4:00pm. Consolidated schools changed everything and made everything worse. Ross Perot Told us the only reason for a high school with 5000 students is you have a better chance of a championship starting lineup.

“I’ve never found it bothersome enough to be ‘sick and tired’ of it.”

My clocks all change automatically, now I will have to change them manually twice a year, just dang.

Schools, etc can start at any time they and parents choose.

Bus schedules determine everything, one of the biggest downfall of abolishing neighborhood schools. Actually now that we have technology there is no reason for huge schools.

Schools could change their hours as well. I’m old enough to remember that school used to start at 9 and end at 3. Not 7:30 to 4:30 to accommodate parents desire for free childcare.

Don’t really care which they pick as long as they stop the clock changing BS. Pick one.

They can split the difference and call it American time for all I care. I just want spring forward/fall back to stop.

Amazing the lack of consensus here, or maybe not, considering stepping one foot to the west on any of those boundaries changes you ST to DST

It is all politics at thr behesy of the Chamber of Commerce.Indiana was originally CST which made us closer to sun time .But the business people eanted to be in step with New York not Chicago. So Indiana is already one hour ahead of sun time, the “daylight “farce put us two hours ahead.

It was better when the “dayligjt saving” period was shorter

DST March 21 to Sept 21 if you must have it.

My recollection is that school started at about 8:15 or 8:30. I was on a 70-minute bus ride in the evening with 10 in the morning. The kids who got on the bus first in the morning really had to get up really early. I hated the bus.

It’s interesting DST is now pushed back into the winter, though to be symmetric around the winter solstice, it would actually go to middle of February. I think some of the microwave towers haven’t caught up with that central-eastern line, because my phone, which is old (4g),runs an hour off through there, which is confusing when you travel.

I thought about it some more...

Seattle’s longest day is about 16 hours.
Philadelphia’s is about 15 hours.
Jacksonville’s is about 14 hours.
Miami’s is something like 13.75 hours - you’d have to go as far south as Guatemala to get a 13 hour longest day.

I’m guessing Seattle doesn’t want a 4 am sunrise and 8 pm sunset.

Perhaps you missed it, MOST kids go to school in the dark if they live North of the Cali-Oregon border every winter.
