Indeed. One thing I remember form 8th grade science class is that Density = Mass/Volume. Gold has a specific density.
Check their volume by submersing them, then weigh them. D=M/V and if D isn't exactly right, then further inspection is warranted.
Also could spot check at random, the occasional bar.
