At the end of WWII the USSR tried to get us to give up the U-505. They wanted it as war reparations. We refused saying that we had captured it lawfully on the high seas during wartime. It was ours and we were going to keep it.

I was a little kid when i took a tour of the U505. Back then, it was called the Museum of Science and Industry.
I only remember going into a couple of compartments but what struck me then was the tight quarters...
YES!! When I left my parents house on the south side I got an apartent in Hyde Park, 6 blocks from the museum. Been inside the U 505 and also watched a short film on the history of how they got it, and moved it to the Museum Dad was a navy guy WWII. It is so small inside. The kitchen was really an alcove. I don’t know how they did it. I am extremely claustrophobic too.
