I think my Grandad believed their value would go up, he never checked the pennies as he got them just put them in coffee cans.
I guess my Uncle, his son thought the same thing, in his later years he told me my Uncle asked for the penny horde when he passes - I said, Fine I want to move soon...lugging thousands of pennies was not in my plans!
1916-D is the merc key date. I saw where a guy found a wicker wrapped wine bottle in the rafters of a Florida barn getting demo’d some years back a something like close to 200 of them in the bottle were 16-D’s. If they were AU, (almost uncirculated) or gradeable Mint State (MS, scale 60-70 w/70 being essentially perfect), that’d be around 250K or more now.
You put that many on the market at once though, you might push that price down 😜
