I mean, if granny passes away but the kids keep the checking account active, would the SS system just keep direct-depositing that money? Are there actually any fool-proof (or nearly fool-proof) ways to stop that?

Don’t hospitals and funeral homes report deaths to someone or issue death certificates? If you bury granny in the back yard, I imagine SS is paid forever because there’s no death certificate filed with the government so they don’t know she died. If I was looking for fraud, I might look at people born before 1925 first and verify that they’re still alive. I won’t be surprised to hear soon that 100,000 people over 120 years old are still collecting SS.

In my parents cases my estate lawyer sent a letter to the SSA ending their SS accounts.

120 year old people collecting SS? It can sort of happen where there is an eligible survivor. I’m always reminded of the Civil War Vet who was collecting a pension. About WW I he married an 18 Y/O gal. When the Vet died she picked up his survivor benefit and lived into the 1990’s.
But, yeah, checking birth dates is a good place to start looking for cadavers pulling checks.
