When it's necessary to use your gun as a club (out of ammo or proximity to the enemy) - it helps to have a slashy/pointy end to it.

For psychological purposes, it amps you up ("Spirit of the Bayonet") and can discourage the bad guys - few people have experienced being shot, but many know the pain of being cut (even accidentally).
