Newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced Monday — his first day in the job — that President Trump will be issuing a spate of executive orders for the military, including one to create an "Iron Dome" defense system like the one used by Israel to deflect incoming missiles.

More than 40 years ago Reagan wanted an anti missile defense and it was dismissed as impossible and derided as “star wars”. Imagine where we would be 40 years later if that system had been implemented.
Which leads to the question what is the cost of not having it when you really need it?
I wonder if we still have Honest John’s, Jupiters and Pershings in our arsenal somewhere?
Not happening. Not with $2T deficit. I don’t think it can get paid for by cancelling DEI in DoD. Not enough money.
So maybe do things like this . . . loudly announce stuff and spend a few thousand dollars on it, because more does not exist.
And never will.
I’m old enough to remember the Nike sites back in the day.

They were so cool!!
Can Iron Dome be done competitively by private bidding and production?
Thank you, I did not know that.
The long range system as only a few dozen missiles, thanks to 0bama’s defunding efforts.
Imagine where we would be 40 years later if that system had been implemented.

It was a materials science and microprocessor problem - neither were up to the task back then.
outstanding... america first!...
You might want to reconsider that assumption.
It is very easy to envision a drone and/or primitive missile attack originating from mexico or international waters.
But, what if they continually evolved until right now?
An iron dome for the United States would be at absolute waste of money. Where would the attack be coming from? an iron Dome isn’t going to protect us from a nuclear war. We already have the fence system in place for that which is kind of poor anyway that doesn’t really work and they’re only 44 missiles.
If any of you wanna really learn about our defense system, our nuclear defense system, and how things would work in a nuclear war I would suggest you read this book. I am reading now by Annie Jacobson., nuclear war a scenario
This is probably one of the most frightening books I’ve ever read in shows the utter folly of any of us thinking that there is a winnable nuclear war because there isn’t one. Every game scenario that’s ever been played for nuclear war has resulted in the total annihilation of this planet.
My battery's motor pool was about 5 miles from a remote Nike Hercules battery. We socialized quite a bit, as we were the only two Army units at Hahn AB. It was a difficult assignment for them, lots of pressure.
My battery's mission was short range air defense at Hahn, two platoons of Chaparral SP systems, and two platoons of Towed Vulcans. During 77-78, I was a platoon leader for three of the four platoons (not at the same time, of course).
One of my "extra duties" was to lead a platoon of 40 soldiers to support that Nike Hercules battery during their Nuclear Surety Inspections. The usual scenario was they were attacked by terrorists attempting to take over their cantonment area.
Name one military program in the last 70 years that has been.
First cover important military and civilian infrastructure then grow from there. I don’t believe that there are enough missiles in the world to cover the whole US. so a good defense is a strong offense. Make sure everyone knows if you blow up something in the US or US interests your country will suffer a great deal.
Hell, let ‘em just stop sending our taxpayer money to Ukraine.
They’ll have plenty to do whatever they want with.
There are two of them in my neighborhood.
“ What would be the cost to cover the US?”
I don’t know. What would 2 or 3 nuclear detonations cost?
L
Why stop at Iron?
We need Tungsten Dome.
Or at least Stainless Steel dome.
