The Senate lost its role when the 17th Amendment was made part of the Constitution.
A brief look at wikipedia shows that since the start of the country there has been very few rejected cabinet picks
She had to vote "no" on Hegseth if she wants to come back (and they all do).
She needs Democrats to vote for her to win. And the anti "toxic masculinity" population among Maine voters, which is substantial, can vote for her because she's a woman.
She took a big chance voting for Kavanaugh, and in the 2020 race she dropped 17% of the vote compared to 2014, squeaking by with <51% of the vote. The angry feminist who ran against her had two more left wing challengers in the race, who together had >49% of the vote. With the next election <2 years away, she couldn't afford a vote for Hegseth - and the GOP Senate can't afford for her to lose.
“Fear of being primaried”.
Yes, elections matter, and they should.
That is better than people getting elected on promises they break as soon as they win office.
” concerned about the damage being done to our constitutional system of separation of powers.”
good to hear.
so come on lefties,
stop doing that.
( gas light projection in its purest form )
democrats complaining about democracy
how quaint.
Rightly so! .......................................... "Republicans in the Senate need to be reminded that we didn’t vote for your sorry butts because we wanted you. "We voted for Trump & you just happened to be his plus one from your state. None of you outperformed Trump in your own state. "Fall in line & confirm his appointments. 6:00 AM · Jan 26, 2025 .............................................

Good analysis and concur; the situation with Collins is far different from that of Murkowski. Collins faces a largely Dem state and electorate; nonetheless, most of her votes are on our side and any replacement would be wholly on the Dem side, just like the other Maine senator, Angus King. Murkowski is in a Red State, was kept afloat by millions from the odious Mitch McConnell, votes for all the Dem nominees and chooses to vote against the Rs on key votes.
Correct.
GPT: Of all cabinet nominees who did not withdraw, what % were confirmed.
It’s 90+%.
And ya, I remain pro Collins.
People do not understand. Maine is deep blue. Trump lost by 7%.
But she holds that seat and votes pro GOP in most instances. She gave a long speech about Kavanaugh that questioned the accusations and voted to confirm him — and dragged several votes with her because it gave them cover.
Collins will evaluate Gabbard. Gabbard co sponsored a bill to leave Snowden alone. Collins is, of course, Swamp and this will bother her, but she will hear Gabbard out. Gabbard won’t cost her any votes in Maine, especially since she is a woman.
The radical "center" wants to defend the status quo so badly they're willing to gid rid of democracy to cling onto power. Germany and France are probably the best examples: coalitions form to keep any party questioning the status quo out of power no matter how many votes they get.
In the UK and US, the "uniparty" does the same: no matter which party you vote for, you get the same destructive policies.
Will that still be the case if Trump boots out the Somalis and arrests the Dem criminals in state government?
Well, Rubio got in 99-0. That's probably all the bipartisanship that Trump is going to get.
Everyone else will require JD Vance to set up a cot in the senate guestroom.
Screw Maine. I’d rather lose the seat than keep her.
Considering the creepy cast of characters biden saddled this country with, it’s beyond hypocritical for democrats to complain about the character of the Trump appointees.
And they’re all basing it on their rhetoric and allegations and questionable accusations.
Like the fear of free speech and a free press. Awful.
Yep. They wanted “more democracy” and passed the 17th Amendment. Now senators answer to the people. They’re getting what they deserve.
That's a really dumb headline.
Senate elections are constitutional and the primaries are a part of the process.
Hegseth is awesome and he’s going to slay some sacred DOD cows.
DC is in a snit now. If only those filthy nasty voters didn’t vote for primary challengers when they act against the voters will. LOL
Yeah, but you’re always saying stupid crap. You probably deserved it.
