It takes a little more nuance to explain this to people who aren’t neck deep in the PC world.
Basic background: Since the dawn of personal computing gaming has been the primary driver of hardware and software innovation as it has been the most intensive use home consumers use a PC for.
Secondary info: Getting another operating system to reach enough usage to have the critical mass to then succeed on its own globally and become a household name is a chicken or the egg problem. It’s why no specific Linux distro has ever become “the one” nor has any other major OS other than Windows, Apple, and maybe Google ever reached the size where the entire industry wants to support it.
The Takeaway: Valves immense global game empire and the recent success of the Steam Deck as well as their software work for Proton which lets almost all Windows games run on their OS... And run well... Puts them in the unique position to offer a Linux distro everyone will use. And not only will it be far more open source than any other option, it will have less bloat and odds are it will start to support all the basics we all want like printers. A true Windows alternative that is focused on running locally on your device without all the MS spy bloat. A system that will ultimately play all your games and HDR movies etc. And maybe a whole lot more because the entire PC industry will support it.
People desperately want something that will do all the basics of what Windows has always done but without the bloat and big brother.
SteamOS actually has the potential to do this. For real. Which is why people are starting to get noisy about supporting it.
Ty. Please tell me they don’t pay you.
Only a small percentage run on Linux/Proton. Most games are greyed out if you look under library.
Thanks for the info—sounds promising.
