>> I read a book and I have no problem understanding the feelings or intent of the words I’m reading. <<

How many times online have people been insulted by or otherwise misunderstood what people wrote because there was no accomapnying signals?

It is not unusual for people on FR to write that they should have marked something as sarcasm, for instance.

In books, authors work really hard to convey the expression in a character’s voice. Authors write: she said through her tears, or his eyes narrowed as he said, or he murmured, said sarcastically, shouted, etc.

Not so easy to understand the CC beneath a news cast without signals, and often with typos and other errors.

If I have trouble understanding a speech, I just concentrate on what is being said by repeating it in my mind.

I usually write “sarcasm for those who can’t understand the obvious” 🤣
