I always liked 1962's "500 Miles." Both "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "500 Miles" are sorrowful, bittersweet love songs.

I can't listen to Mary Travers sing "500 Miles" without shivers down my neck and spine. Their harmonies and her crystalline voice are incredible. From YouTube:

Lyrically, "500 Miles" tells a story of longing and determination. The protagonist expresses their willingness to go the distance, traveling 500 miles, just to be with the one they love. The simplicity and sincerity of the lyrics resonate with listeners, evoking feelings of yearning and devotion.

The stripped-down arrangement of the song allows the vocals to take center stage. The gentle strumming of the acoustic guitar and occasional harmonica accents provide a melodic backdrop that supports the emotional weight of the lyrics. The simplicity of the instrumentation enhances the intimacy of the song and adds to its timeless appeal.

500 Miles is on an album in my family’s vinyl collection, trotted out now and then when someone needs cheering up. It is a beautiful tune. Gets me misty because my mom used to sing it to me when I was little. Great song to be rocked to.

A singer named Richard Anthony sang a French version you can hear on youtube:
