Według zasad savoir-vivre życzenie komuś „smacznego” przed konsumpcją zarezerwowane jest wyłącznie dla gospodarza. Zazwyczaj dzieje się to w sytuacji, kiedy zaserwował już wszystkim uczestnikom danie i daje znać, że można zacząć jeść. W innych przypadkach mówienie sobie wzajemnie „smacznego” nie jest w dobrym tonie.

Now that is fascinating, Mrs. Liz 🙂, because here in Germany we have the same exact dining etiquette, though sometimes your host will politely ask you to begin as soon as she or he has served you.

This is normally the case if there are many guests to serve, and the food in question is supposed to be eaten hot (there is a reason so many hosts serve a salad as the first course) 🙂 This also applies if you are invited to a restaurant, since, sadly, the meals are not always served at the same time for every guest…
