Absurd. Neither did the Supremes.
Most music was recorded by studio musicians behind the band's vocals. The Wrecking Crew (LA). The Swampers (Muscle Shoals(. The A Team (Nashville). The Funk Bros (Motown). The Memphis Horns (Sun Records).
BTW, if you’ve never seen the documentary about the Muscle Shoals Swampers, it is totally worthwhile. Recommended.
The Monkees did play their own instruments, just not on the studio albums. Mike and Micky were in garage bands and Peter played piano since his childhood and learned several other instruments. Davy could play guitar but usually just played percussion instruments in concert.
My favorite “Weird Al” song is Word Crimes. They should probably play that one in English classes.
If the Supremes made it into the Hall of Fame, they deserved it. They can rock!
Snap, Crackle & Pop--The Supremes (1958)
Yeah thats a pretty thin excuse. Maybe because they often were staged to look like they were playing the instruments. The Supremes never did that.
I think though its pretty lame. I mean “instrument syncing” but you’re singing disqualifies you, but how many singers do concerts lip syncing or using autotune on their tracks, they still get inducted?
