I’d go with two fixed national holidays (July 4 and Jan 1 - the second on the theory that folks will be too hung over to work productively, anyway), and then give folks a choice of 4 ‘affinity days’ - but you have to be in a group that celebrates that day - so Christians could have Christmas Day if they wanted it; Catholics and others that observe it could opt in to Good Friday; Union members, OB/GYNs and Midwives could have labor day. Honorably discharged veterans could have Veterans day, Blacks could have Martin Luther King Day, people who lost a relative of the first or second degree could opt for Memorial Day, ex-Presidents could have “President’s Day”, etc.
Folks would have to declare by December 1 of the previous year what 4 affinity days they would take the next year.
And, this should appease the liberals, this encourages diversity in hiring, as a diverse workforce would ensure that there is always someone available to cover.

Bingo!
Affinity days. That’s a nice concept. Still I think there’s something to be said for shutting down everything Dec. 26-31-four days extra. A good time to reflect and bring folks together. Still a lot of people will be working.
