I’m seeing reports that this was a standard flight path for helicopters around DCA. WTF? I live near a helicopter flight path and am always using Flight Radar 24 app to see who is hovering or circling over my house. It’s usually either police, medivac, tribal, or the mystery no info chopper that flies back and forth from Mesa airport. I also get military Black Hawks going overhead, although I haven’t captured any of them on the app recently… those flights seem to be way down.

My point is, I watch it often and I have NEVER seen helicopters sent across the path of the runways. They are always traveling parallel to the runways. If they are landing at the airport, they always approach from the north. If they need to go south, they go way around and avoid the airspace near the runways. There is a police helicopter this morning that had to go south of Sky Harbor…. Police usually come out of Deer Valley airport to the north. So this guy went way out to the west of PHX and followed 35th Avenue south before cutting East to Tempe.That is plenty of space between him and air traffic, which this morning is landing West to East. These approaching planes are making their turns and following 67th Avenue south to turn into the airport, so plenty of space.

”Standard flight path” my Fanny. If that is true, there are major issues with ATC and FAA.
