Impeccable timing sir.

I grew up in eastern NC. If it was snowing in Raleigh or Richmond, we didn't care. If it was snowing in Atlanta, we got ready.

The big problem for us was always ice. The pine branches would lick up and hold the ice. They wouldn't break but would suddenly snap and bring down the lot. The piney woods would sound like a battle zone from the crack of breaking pine branches.

Fortunately for us, we have buried utilities. The only way we lose power is if the sub-station goes out or there is some idiot with a backhoe involved.

Never underestimate the ability of an idiot with a backhoe to find the buried power lines, even if they called ahead and had them clearly marked.

Also, a lot of underground feeds have an overhead component farther upstream between the underground portion and the substation. Not all, of course. Downtown Cleveland, for example, was purely underground from station to customer. On the other hand, my neighborhood here in SE TN is underground, but is fed from an overhead circuit right at the entrance to the neighborhood.

We do, however, have a pretty sophisticated "smart grid" which essentially uses many pole-top switching devices (circuit breakers) to automatically isolate sections where the damage is while restoring the rest of the circuit from alternate feeds. Something we used to do with 2 line trucks and about an hour of dispatching, it does in seconds.
