topmast
The second section of the mast above the deck; formerly the upper mast, later surmounted by the topgallant mast; carrying the topsails. Warships often went into battle under topsails alone to prevent the lower sails from catching fire from the cannon blasts.
topgallant mast
The third section of the mast above the deck carrying the Topgallant sail; formerly the upper mast. Topgallant masts were often struck down to the deck when heavy weather was expected. The topgallant mast was rarely surmounted by the royal mast; carrying the royals. Royals were very fragile used only in very light air when it was necessary to get every bit of speed possible.
