It’s hard to make a true comparison between now versus any other time in American History

Agreed. And the reason is because our history books won't keep records of a nation's wrongdoings. They want to only emphasize the good times, to wrongly cast the truly noble and righteous people as enemies of the state, and skip over events such as you outlined in your post.

For example Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke and became disabled 18 months prior to his presidency ended and his wife hid the fact from the public when Wilson should have been removed
