In general, radiation is nothing to play around with as even low doses can have negative effects depending on the timing of the exposure. Biggest source I used for calibration was a 10 Curie Neutron source, and there is zero margin for error. Contrary to what many think about radiation, all forms aren't the same. Lead isn't used for protection against neutron, but water and polyethylene can work as barriers. It took a lot of water bricks and effort to build out the calibration room.
