Although a reliable and useful member of NATO, Denmark (in commonwealth with a nominally independent Greenland) does not have the desire, strength, or resources to develop Greenland and carry that kind of weight against Russia. The aboriginal natives of Greenland also grumble about their American Inuit cousins in Alaska having greater prosperity and respect than what the parsimonious and less engaging Danes provide.

He is serious about reminding Putin that the US is not to be trifled with by boastful talk of asserting Russian military power and seizing oil and gas and other resources in the Arctic. American bases in Greenland are the stuff of nightmares for Putin -- and a potential bargaining chip for Trump even if nothing comes of buying Greenland.
