Are the voles simply a food source, or are the squirrels regarding them as competitors for the seeds and nuts, clearing them out like a rival gang?
They eat them. Pass the salt..................
They always have a taste for protein. Sit near a ground squirrel colony with a scoped rifle and smack a couple of them. Right away their buddies will come out to snack on the remains.
Even deer have been observed eating meat from carcasses..........
Our neighborhood squirrels and crows will eat almost anything except broccoli. (On the one subject of broccoli it seems that George Bush was right….)
“Forget Nuts – California Squirrels Are Hunting for Meat!”
If they want to keep access to meat, the Squirrels need to stop voting for Democrats as I doubt it will even be available in California 10 years from now, the way that state is circling the drain in the name of ‘climate change’.
California Vole! It’s not nuts! Its what’s for Dinner!
Many animals thought to be non-meat-eating will gladly eat a bit of meat. I’ve seen quail fighting over little balls of ground beef left for the cactus wrens. And the various ground squirrels will gladly gorge on caterpillars in the spring, holding them, squirming, in their front paws and nibbling their way down.
Word has gotten out to the squirrel community to up their protein intake to get stronger so they can fight back when confronted by the Feds and not end up like Peanut.
I believe coyotes will also eat their brothers.
Like most Californians, squirrels are nuts.
Eat baby birds all the time.
Squirrels = Tree rats
Thats fake...
Canadian squirrels eat poutine.
Bummer Man, I was having a good morning until your post brought back the image of a decapitated squirrel who’s big mistake was trusting people. Only trust a moose I say. Also there was a Racoon friend who was whacked as well. NY, what a screwed up place.
Saw that on a golf course in Clearwater, FL. Was golfing with a friend when we happened to see a squirrel above a robin in a tree. The next thing we saw was the squirrel pounced and had the robin in its mouth as it scurried away....
Could have done without pictures.
Squirrels eat anything, including each other.
